KILROYS 2 FEI 17
Kilroys took the field tonight in the season opener hoping that they could rally up some runs without really practing throughout the off season. It proved ugly when they gave up 13 runs in the 3rd inning. With one out Kilroys seemed poised and polished but an early error opened the door to the baker's dozen. After the error, pitcher Matt Piccirilli gave up 3 home runs (one in the park and 2 that haven't landed yet.)
It was a rocky start with outfielder Rick Metzger leading off and striking out looking. After the first inning, the team looked good and was in the game with the score at 3-2. Pitches were over the plate, grounders were fielded and popups gloved. The infield consisting of Tony Rompca at shortstop, Scott Cowan at third, and Ray Gomez at second, mananged to orchestrate a double play and out of the 2nd inning. After that the hitting was soft, the pitching was flat and the defense was sloppy.
"Well the home opener is in 2 weeks." stated first baseman and player coach Aaron Gibson who went 0-2. "We got that ass beat! That's what we get for not practicing. What you gonna do"
Scott Cowan who recorded the first hit of the season vented, "Yeah it was me that opened the door to the 13 run inning, but at least I got the first hit of the season." A bright spot for Kilroys was Marc Piccirilli. He drove in the lone 2 runs for Kilroys scoring Rudy Monterubbio and younger brother Matt with a single to center.
FEI proved that they could place the ball better than Kilroys and with the score at 16-2 after three innings, Kilroys battled not to give up one run in the 4th, but they couldn't hold on. Slaughter rule was called after the 17th run crossed the plate for FEI. Second baseman Ramon Gomez, said after the game, "I wasn't impressed with FEI at all and it does't matter."
Kilroys next game is Monday Apr 19th at 8:30 against Kusiak Construction.
