Finally, after a week of rain delays, the Kilroy's Softball Squad was able to get back on the field Monday to attack their double header for the evening.
Scott Cowan and the Metzger brothers arrived with a cooler full of water for the team since the evening was unseasonably warm for May. Unfortunately, the weather may have been too warm since one minute before game time, Kilroy's only had 8 players.
Pitcher Matt Piccirilli had a prior commitment and coach Gibson already approved his leave for the evening. Ramon Gomez also was on the NA list. Gomez's popularity has grown to rock star proportions after his appearance on the Kilroy's Softball Radio Network. For security reasons, he was not allowed to leave the building.
Coach Gibson, keeping his professional demeanor, tried to get in contact with Kyle Delaney.
After several minutes, a text message appeared from Delaney stating "I'm tied up!"
Thus adding further truth to the rumors the midget Delaney was allegedly involved with came looking for revenge.
The only response from Coach Gibson, "His ass is getting a red tag!!"
At game time, Kilroy's still with only 8 players, were looking at the teams first of two forfeits that night. The umpires gave Kilroy's the standard 5 minute grace period before the game was called.
Two minutes into the grace period, Tony Rompca sprints towards the field. Facing a huge challenge, Kilroy's takes the field with their nine warriors to do battle with Coach's Corner.
The game started out slow and Kilroy's, being a player down, did their best to cover the entire outfield with only three outfielders. Everyone gave it their best to overcome the odds but Kilroy's came up short.
Replacement pitcher Bob Kocher was warned several times from the home plate umpire about illegal pitches. In an effort to spark some fire into his team, right fielder Rudy Monterubio stretched out to filed a high fly ball and instead of gloving the ball, Monterubio took it to the head Jose Canseco style.
After four innings of play, Kilroy's continued to bleed runs and the umpires finally had to call the game.
Game 2 against FEI proved to be no better. After the 1st inning, Kilroy's was down 19 to zero. Coach Gibson made some field adjustments as he moved from 1st base to the outfield and left Anthony Spinosa to cover both 1st and 2nd.
Kilroy's did come alive and showed they would not go into the night without a fight. They fought back scoring 13 runs to bring the score within 6.
However, FEI answered by dominating the next couple of innings.
The Pub team of the nine players, fell apart. The fielding collapsed along with the hitting.
In the last inning, outfielder Phil Metzger hit a ground ball to the 2nd baseman who back handed gloved it and made the play at first. As Metzger walked back to the bench, he stated "I just want to go home."
After the beating, the score resembled the scoreboard from the 85 Bear's Super Bowl with Kilroy's losing 42 - 14.
The only words from Coach Gibson were "We played like a bunch of clowns!"
Kilroy's gets a bye next week due to the holiday; which is the only thing that worked out for the team this week.
